That’s the way the Mountaineers viewed those 30 mph wind gusts they were facing down at East Carolina last weekend when they won their first collegiate tournament since the reinstatement of the golf program in 2015.
“We had a running joke last year that there was a hurricane following us around,” Alan Cooke, a senior on this year’s golf team, said recently. “Every tournament we went to it was blowing at least 20 (mph).”
Cooke, from Vienna, West Virginia, is typical of the type golfer Sean Covich has in the Mountaineer program right now - a good but somewhat overlooked player looking for a chance to play some high-level college golf in the Big 12 Conference.
