Routt, defense lead West Virginia rout of Madrid in exhibition opener

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — West Virginia didn’t miss the services of prized recruit Oscar Tshiebwe on Tuesday.

Logan Routt and a WVU defense that forced 20 turnovers and recorded 12 steals made sure of that.

In the first of three exhibition games during its tour of Spain, the Mountaineers ran away from the Madrid All-Stars in the fourth quarter to pick up an easy 97-69 victory.

WVU never trailed and six players scored in double figures with sophomore forward Emmitt Matthews leading the way with 17 points.

Tshiebwe, a 6-foot-9 forward from the Democratic Republic of Congo and the first five-star recruit to sign with the Mountaineers since 2008, did not make the trip due to a visa restriction.
