MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia returned to the AP Top 25 on Sunday, debuting at No. 22 after a 4-0 start bolstered by close victories over Kansas State and BYU.
The last time the Mountaineers were ranked? Almost a year ago to the day, when they briefly appeared at No. 23 before losing at Oklahoma 44-24 on Oct. 3, 2015.
One of three Big 12 teams in this week’s Top 25, West Virginia began conference action with a 17-16 squeaker over K-State, rallying from a 13-point hole in the fourth quarter and buckling down as the Wildcats’ Matt McCrane missed a 42-yard kick with 2:03 remaining.
