MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia’s baseball team, onlookers during the past 21 NCAA tournaments, won’t be on the sideline this postseason.
The Mountaineers (34-24) were placed in the Winston Salem Regional as the No. 2 seed and will face third-seeded Maryland (37-21). In the other matchup, No. 1 seed Wake Forest (39-18) meets UMBC (23-23).
Fifth-year coach Randy Mazey, whose arrival coincided with West Virginia joining the Big 12, has steadily elevated the program, bolstered by a full complement of scholarships and a new $21 million ballpark.
Despite losing weekend starters Conner Dotson and Michael Grove midseason, West Virginia finished fourth in the Big 12, the nation’s top-rated RPI conference.
