Mountaineers hold on to edge aggressive Cal in opener

BERKELEY, Calif. — Jad Arslan’s sliding goal gave West Virginia an early lead and Stephen Banick sparkled with four saves in his college debut to beat Cal 1-0 on Friday in men’s soccer.

The Mountaineers (1-0) didn’t record a shot in the second half yet made the lead stand.

Arslan’s goal, the 12th of his career, came at 19:06 after Cal goalkkeeper Drake Callender tripped up Rushawn Larmond dribbling into the box. The ball ricocheted away heading wide until Arslan poked it into the corner.

Arslan had another chance in the 28th minute but his cross from the near side inside the box was blocked away.
