Mountaineers draw on road against defending national champs

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Down late to the defending national champions, No. 5 West Virginia scored the equalizer in the 77th minute thanks to Michaela Abam and ultimately forced a 1-1 double-overtime draw at No. 2 Penn State on Friday night in the season opener.

Playing in front of a record-crowd of 5,791 fans at Jeffrey Field, the Nittany Lions were primed to milk the final 15 minutes when the Mountaineers capitalized.

Receiving the ball from Amandine Pierre-Louis near midfield, sophomore Vanessa Flores led a streaking Abam with a through pass up the left side of the box.
