Mountaineer battle their way to win

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen went away from his pass-happy roots this season, his Mountaineers instead relying on an excellent rushing attack to move the ball on defenses.

Saturday in the desert, ‘Air Raid’ made its return.

Skyler Howard threw for 532 yards -- second-most in school history -- and his fifth touchdown pass of the game with 2:19 left helped West Virginia pull out a wild, 43-42 win against Arizona State in the Cactus Bowl at Chase Field.

Trailing, 42-36, Howard led West Virginia on a scoring drive that included Wendell Smallwood’s 24-yard run on 3rd-and-22 from the Arizona State 39.
