MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Mike Molina dead-centered three field goals during West Virginia’s scrimmage Saturday, hitting from 42, 22 and 21 yards.
There also came one misfire, from just inside 30 yards, the kind of slip-up to be shrugged off if came with Josh Lambert’s resume. But for a walk-on like Molina, a kid who has yet to attempt a college field goal over three seasons, each miss brings more scrutiny.
“I think I hit a little too much turf on that one,” said Molina, the fill-in during Lambert’s upcoming three-game suspension.
He’s replacing a kicker on pace to become West Virginia’s career scoring leader, a teammate who in 2014 produced one of the best long-distance seasons in NCAA history by making 16 field goals of 40-plus yards.
