KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A goal and several more chances in the final 10 minutes was not enough for the West Virginia men’s soccer team in a 2-1 loss at Western Michigan on Saturday.
The Mountaineers (8-6-1, 1-3-0 Mid-American Conference) trailed 2-0 after 16 minutes before scoring on a penalty kick in the 80th minute after a red card was shown to WMU keeper Drew Shepherd. However, down a man for the final 10 minutes and facing a strong offensive push, the Broncos (9-4-4, 1-0-3 MAC) prevented the equalizer.
At 79:51, WVU defender Jack Elliott was taken down in the box by Shepherd and then converted on the Mountaineers’ first penalty kick of the season.
