MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A high school safety who switched to outside linebacker in junior college, Charlie Benton could be West Virginia’s Spur of the future.
The three-star prospect from Butler (Kan.) Community College committed to the Mountaineers on Sunday and told Rivals he’s on pace to enroll in December.
At 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, Benton has the size and mobility defensive coordinator Tony Gibson covets in the hybrid Spur position currently being manned by senior Kyzir White. He also could potentially grow into a Sam or Will linebacker on the outside.
A redshirt freshman who holds offers from Iowa State, Bowling Green and Georgia State, Benton will have three years’ eligibility remaining upon enrolling at the FBS level.
