Holmes’ 26 carries West Virginia women past Princeton

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Bria Holmes scored 26 points and dealt eight assists as sixth-seeded West Virginia finally put away Princeton 74-65 in the first round of the NCAA women’s tournament Friday.

“It’s tournament time, so you’re just trying to survive, and that’s what we did this game,” WVU coach Mike Carey said.

Tynice Martin added 16 points off the bench for the Mountaineers (25-9), who survived 28-percent first-half shooting to lead 30-29.

“We had to come out and be more aggressive in the second half,” said Holmes. “In the first half we weren’t shooting well and I don’t think we were communicating well either.
