MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia has surpassed the media’s preseason forecast during three of the past four years, and coach Dana Holgorsen suggests that trend could continue.
The Mountaineers opened camp Sunday afternoon, picked to finish sixth in the Big 12 and feeling undervalued.
“You look at all the projections out there and we’re supposed to stink,” Holgorsen said. “But I think we’re in a pretty good spot.”
Coming off a 10-win season in which they easily beat seventh-place projections, the Mountaineers appear dangerous on offense and dubious on defense. Such shortcomings forced newcomers to play prematurely several years ago, but Holgorsen contends better recruiting has deepened the talent pool.
