Virginia Tech plans to start redshirt freshman Josh Jackson in the Sept. 3 season opener against West Virginia.

Hokies coach Justin Fuente made the announcement Monday, elevating Jackson over Nebraska transfer A.J. Bush and true freshman Hendon Hooker.

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound Jackson was an early enrollee in 2016, ranked a three-star prospect by Rivals and the No. 23 dual-threat quarterback in the nation. West Virginia was among the Power Five schools that offered Jackson a scholarship, joining Minnesota, Northwestern, Utah Boston College, and Syracuse.

Jackson’s father Fred coached at Michigan for 22 years, three of those alongside current West Virginia defensive coordinator Tony Gibson.
