Friday Lunch: Hometown links coaches from WVU, Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Three decades ago in their Western Pennsylvania hometown, as 14,000 fans filed in to watch the nation’s largest amateur baseball tournament, a teenage Tom Walter specifically watched for Randy Mazey.

These two, now head coaches at Wake Forest and West Virginia, dedicated a few minutes to nostalgia while preparing for their NCAA regional.

“Randy was three years older than me, so I remember watching him and seeing what a talented player he was,” Walter said.

A couple years later, Walter played in that same AAABA Tournament under the coaching of Mazey’s father, Forrest.
