ESPN, ever keeping the college football world turning, released their FPI - Football Power Index - earlier this week and the Mountaineers are curiously low. Spring predictions are about as accurate as weathermen but the Mountaineers rankings is still a headscratcher. In 2016, FPI correctly predicted that the Oklahoma Sooners would win the Big 12 and that West Virginia was being underrated by most experts. In February of 2016, FPI had the Mountaineers as the 24th best team.
Why would FPI, which foresaw the Mountaineers taking a leap into the 10-win realm, predict the Mountaineers might not even win 6 games?
