Column: West Virginia’s defense couldn’t seize 4th-quarter moment

COMMENTARY

STILLWATER, Okla. — Backed into crushing postures on a couple Oklahoma State touchdowns, West Virginia’s defense smelled its chance to make amends.

Nine minutes left. Deficit trimmed from 17 to seven. Energy escalating on the gold-and-blue sideline.

Plus this time, Oklahoma State’s offense wasn’t gifted a turnover in the red zone. Rather, it had to make an honest go from a more conventional starting position, its own 33-yard line. Equal footing for Tony Gibson’s unit to heat up the Cowboys and keep the comeback cooking.

Annnnnnd thud.

The visitors’ uprising was squashed by OSU’s Mason Rudolph and a couple receivers not named James Washington.
