Burned by confusion early, Gross and West Virginia defense recovered

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Given only a week to essentially learn a new position, West Virginia’s Marvin Gross found himself exploited after just three plays by Delaware State.

His failure to cover Nyseace West out of the backfield left a wheel route wide open for an 81-yard touchdown.

“Just a bust,” Gross said. “I was a little confused.”

The confusion was understandable for a guy who spent the past two years playing Spur safety but made the switch to Bandit safety this week after Toyous Avery’s hand injury.

“At Spur you’re always attacking and you have to make more physical plays.
