ACL tear verified: Brendan Ferns out for season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Four-star recruit Brendan Ferns, poised to serve as West Virginia’s middle linebacker after an impressive preseason camp, was lost for the season to a torn ACL, the school confirmed Tuesday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, as Ferns awaited an MRI on his left knee, a team source told MetroNews “it does not look good.” The diagnosis bore that out, and now the highly regarded true freshman faces a rehab that likely will keep him on the sideline through spring drills.

Ferns showed athleticism and instincts during the first two weeks of camps, giving defensive coordinator Tony Gibson confidence to guarantee him playing time behind starter Al-Rasheed Benton.
