Abam-to-Portillo gives No. 3 West Virginia fast start vs. Cyclones

AMES, Iowa – No. 3-ranked West Virginia’s top goal-scorer Michaela Abam fed assist leader Carla Portillo in the 14th minute, a turnabout that sent the Mountaineers ahead for good in Sunday’s 2-0 win at Iowa State.

“Those two have a connection on the field, as they should because they spend so much time together,” said West Virginia coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “They were able to connect and finish one, and that’s all that matters.”

Abam took a cross from Heather Kaleiohi in the box and then played the ball into Portillo, who easily finished from six-yards out.
