WVU Football News: Mountaineers, Tennessee Volunteers to play in Charlotte?

In this edition of WVU football news, West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck is attempting to make an interesting alteration to the Mountaineers' 2018 schedule.

Per the Charleston Gazette, Luck is attempting to secure a neutral-site match-up with the SEC's Tennessee Volunteers, to be played in Charlotte, North Carolina.

WVU's director of football operations, Alex Hammond, told the Gazette "we're close to finalizing a deal to play Tennessee in Charlotte in 2018. ... That would give us a marquee game in a marquee venue. It would be exciting for the fans and the team."

Despite Hammond's assertion, Will Webb, executive director of the Charlotte Sports Foundation, made it clear that nothing is finalized as of yet --

"We're talking to a number of high profile teams, and we'd love to have teams like Tennessee and West Virginia here," Webb stated. "But we're in not in a position to comment on anything now."

WVU has played in Charlotte's Belk Bowl on two occasions: falling to Virginia 48-22 in 2002's inaugural bowl, and then beating North Carolina in a 31-30 thriller in front of a sellout crowd in 2008.
