Hammersmith Bridge finally reopens - but only to cyclists as drivers miss out again five years after it closed for £250m refurb

London's Hammersmith Bridge will finally reopen next week five years after it was closed on safety grounds but only to cyclists with motorists still being strictly prohibited from driving across the 137-year-old crossing.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council has said the creation of temporary cycle lanes has come about due to a pause in the stabilisation works on the bridge caused by a boat full of West Ham fans being stuck underneath it in December.

The boat carrying the fans became stuck underneath the bridge and damaged part of the gantry, meaning works had to be paused.
