The Washington Wizards have decided to part ways with longtime general manager Ernie Grunfeld, the team announced Tuesday.
Grunfeld first joined the organization in 2003, overseeing multiple rebuilds. But the Wizards are headed toward another one this summer after a disappointing season in which Washington failed to make the playoffs.
Owner Ted Leonsis on firing Ernie Grunfeld: “We did not meet our stated goals of qualifying for the playoffs this season and, despite playing with injuries to several key players, we have a culture of accountability and a responsibility of managing to positive outcomes.”

Assistant general manager Tommy Sheppard was named as the team’s interim general manager with a full search underway.
