Randy Wittman fired by Washington Wizards

Following a disappointing 41-41 season, the Washington Wizards fired coach Randy Wittman on Wednesday night after the team’s final game, according to a source.

Wittman took over for Flip Saunders in January of 2012 after Saunders was fired. He spent the next four seasons reworking the Wizards into a defense-first team. In 2014 and ‘15, Washington made it to the semifinals of the Eastern Conference playoffs, which prompted hope that this season would lead to another step forward.

Instead, the Wizards wobbled through a season filled with injury and inconsistency. Wittman became the fall guy for the failure.
