I thought the move to release Marbut would have made a lot more sense a year ago. At that time, the Cougars had a veteran roster and the team was expected to seriously contend for the postseason. However, the Cougars amassed a 24-30 record.
Prior to last season, Marbut’s tenure with WSU was rocky. The Cougars were coming off four straight non-winning seasons, slipping to 45-72 in conference play.
On top of that, WSU lost eight players who did not leave school early to pursue professional careers.
Comparatively, the 2014 and 2015 seasons showed large improvements.
