For the first time ever, a Washington State Cougars athlete has won a top award for the Seattle Sports Star of the Year, as Gardner Minshew II brought home the male athlete of the year at the the 84th Annual MTRWestern Sports Star of the Year banquet at Seattle’s Grand Sheraton Hotel on Thursday.
The award was determined, of course, by a fan vote.
Minshew’s journey to Pullman is well known at this point, and his remarks in receiving the award featured his trademark humor and humility.
“Last year, I was sitting at home, didn’t really have any offers and didn’t know what was going to happen,” he said, recalling his decision to leave East Carolina.
