41-year-old Bernard Lagat’s fast start in 10,000 race costs him

Former WSU star bows out of the 10,000 at Olympic trials, but hopes to clinch a fifth Olympic bid in the 5,000m on Monday

EUGENE, Ore. — For 17 laps in the grueling 25-lap 10,000 meter men’s final Friday night at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials, Bernard Lagat looked as if he’d drank from the fountain of youth.

The 41-year-old Washington State alum went into the race at Hayward Field with the sixth-best qualifying time – a 27:49.35 that he ran at the Payton Jordan Invitational in May to set a new masters world record.
