Panthers to release Cam Newton: reports

The Carolina Panthers are expected to release quarterback Cam Newton on Tuesday after they were unable to trade the former MVP, according to multiple reports.

Newton, the first overall pick in 2011, spent nine seasons in Carolina, taking the Panthers to the Super Bowl during the 2015 season. But his last two years were impacted by injury, leading Carolina this offseason to move on and start fresh with new coach Matt Rhule.

According to the NFL Network, the Panthers found no team interested in trading for Newton, who played just two games last season before sidelined with a foot injury.
