The Washington Football Team has only one quarterback under contract for 2021 that has ever taken a snap in an NFL regular-season game: Alex Smith. They also have Steve Montez, the former Colorado quarterback. Montez is, in my eyes, a practice squad quarterback; the fact that Ron Rivera signed Taylor Heinicke off of his sofa in December rather than trusting Montez, who had been with the team since training camp, says all I need to know to inform that opinion.
Alex Smith’s situation seems problematic. First, his recent issues with his calf seem to drop him firmly into the “unreliable” category from a health standpoint.
