Trea Turner breaks Nationals record for stolen bases

Shortstop Trea Turner broke the Washington Nationals’ single-season record for stolen bases Tuesday against the Atlanta Braves, recording his 42nd steal.

Turner broke Alfonso Soriano’s mark of 41, which was set in 2006. Soriano set that record over the course of 159 games, but Turner matched it after his 88th game.

The 24-year-old missed two months with a fractured wrist, coming off the disabled list on Aug. 29. He’s played 20 games since and had seven steals in that span.

The record for stolen bases in a single season for the franchise, which includes the Montreal Expos, is 97 by Ron LeFlore in 1980.
