The Washington Nationals have suspended assistant hitting coach Jacque Jones with pay, pending an internal investigation pursuant to a legal matter, the team announced just prior to the start of Game 1 of the National League Division Series between the Nationals and Chicago Cubs on Friday night.

Jones was hired in 2016 as part of manager Dusty Baker’s staff. Jones, who played 10 major-league seasons, was a bubbly personality around the Nationals. The news of his suspension from the team was sudden and surprising.

The Nationals said they would have no further comment because Jones‘ situation is an ongoing legal matter.
