The 35-year-old slugger suffered through shoulder pain and discomfort during the 2014 season, even sitting out a week in early August. In spite of the injury, Werth hit .292 with 16 home runs and 82 RBIs for the NL East champion Nationals in regular-season play. He was for 1-for-17 in the playoffs.

Werth is entering year five of a seven-year, $126 million pact with the Nationals, and will likely play a new position as Washington plans to switch him from right field to left field in a swap with teammate Bryce Harper.
