Sounders sign Austrian attacking midfielder Andreas Ivanschitz from Spanish club Levante

The Sounders have signed Austrian attacking midfielder Andreas Ivanschitz from Spain’s Levante, the club announced Tuesday morning in a release, pending the receipt of his visa and transfer certificate and with terms undisclosed.

Ivanschitz, 31, was at one time considered one of the brightest playmaking prospects in Europe and was named the Austrian Footballer of the Year in 2003. He began his career with domestic powerhouse Rapid Vienna before later suiting up for Panathinaikos in Greece and Mainz in Germany.

Ivanschitz spent the past two seasons with Levante. Something of a set-piece specialist — his Wikipedia page refers to him as the “David Beckham of Austria” — the midfielder has earned 69 caps with the Austrian national team and scored 12 international goals.
