Christmas in August can mean a lot to a child in need

THE nonprofit Hopelink struggles with a common misconception that children from suburban families in North and East King County do not need as much help as their peers in urban Seattle.

Kris Betker, Hopelink’s spokeswoman, points to high free and reduced-price lunch rates in local schools and a lack of affordable housing in the Eastside as evidence that poverty exists in the shadow of Microsoft.

Families come to Hopelink for help getting back on their feet. Demand is high for housing and counseling services, food-bank visits, adult education and other services.
