In the statement, NFL independent neurologist Robert N. Kurtzke recommended that Griffin be retested in "one-two weeks" before a decision about his readiness to compete is made. The Redskins open their regular season Sept. 13 against the Miami Dolphins at FedEx Field.

The timeline of Griffin's ongoing concussion evaluations also could serve as a factor that positions Cousins to take the starting job beyond Saturday night. Kurtzke recommended that Griffin be held out of game play and then be re-tested in one to two weeks before receiving clearance.
