During the offseason Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden had a chance to hire a defensive coordinator that would come in and improve on what Jim Haslett had failed to do in the five seasons he was in the position. Gruden interviewed the likes of Vic Fangio and Wade Phillips but ended up hiring Joe Barry.
Gruden stated that he wanted a younger coach with a lot of energy and while Barry brought that to the table, one thing that he didn’t was tangible success to point to as was a failure as a DC previously with the Detroit Lions.
