Offseason questions: Should the Redskins let Alfred Morris depart via free agency?

Among successful NFL general managers, it’s a widely accepted principle that you never pay for past performance. Instead, you pay players for the performance they’re expected to deliver.

That, in a nutshell, is what makes it unlikely that the Washington Redskins will make much of an effort to bring back Alfred Morris, their two-time Pro Bowl running back, for a fifth season. Redskins President Bruce Allen said as much earlier this week in an interview with ESPN980 host Chris Cooley from the site of Sunday’s Super Bowl.

“I think free agency is going to be a great test for him,” Allen said of Morris, 27, who’s coming off his least productive season in the NFL just as he becomes an unrestricted free agent, able to sign with any team that offers a deal.
