Roster taking shape after five cuts, including Roy, Peters

The Capitals’ opening day roster is taking shape after the team announced it released veteran center Derek Roy from his professional tryout contract and cut goaltender Justin Peters, defensemen Aaron Ness and Ryan Stanton and forward Liam O’Brien.

That leaves the Capitals with a training camp roster of 24, though the active roster doesn’t include injured forward Chris Brown (hand) or top-line center Nicklas Backstrom (hip), who could be activated at any point. Peters, Ness and Stanton require waivers, and will play in the American Hockey League this season, along with O’Brien. With an active roster of 22 players, this is expected to be the Capitals’ opening night roster, barring any last-minute additions.
