Nicklas Backstrom practices with team

For the first time in training camp, Nicklas Backstrom skipped onto the ice with the rest of the Washington Capitals, participating in a full practice, though for him it was non-contact. Backstrom had arthroscopic hip surgery in May, and the top-line center’s status for the season opener is uncertain, though rejoining the team on Wednesday was an encouraging sign.

Washington Coach Barry Trotz and Backstrom said there’s no timetable for his return and no timetable for when he might fully participate in practice with contact.

“We’ll see,” Backstrom said. “I mean, I’m trying to work hard every day, but there’s no timetable.
