The Capitals and Senators met for the first time this season in a New Years Day battle of capital cities in Washington, DC. The Capitals were able to squeak by their guests thanks to two goals from their rearguards in a 2 to 1 victory over Ottawa on home ice.
First up, Sunday night’s Plus/Minus.
- Plus: Karl Alzner tallied his third goal of the season in the second period and all three of his goals this season have come against Canadian clubs (Winnipeg, Vancouver, and Ottawa).
- Minus: With 11 minutes to play Washington was whistled for two minor penalties during the same sequence of play, giving Ottawa a full two minute two man advantage.
