The Caps have re-signed fourth-line center Nic Dowd to a two-year, $6-million contract extension (press release below). On the plus side, Dowd has posted a career-high 27 points and 14 goals this season, hasn’t missed a game, has shouldered a heavy defensive burden with aplomb and brings elite vibes. On the negative side, he’s already 34 years old and the Caps have shown repeatedly that they can identify bottom-six forwards on the cheap and turn them into valuable contributors. With a rising cap, this isn’t an awful deal or one that’s going to hamstring them, but it is… curious.
