At Verizon Center, new boards put bounce in Capitals' step

In an early February game against the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2013 at Verizon Center, Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson made about as routine a hockey play as there is: He dumped the puck so his team could get a line change and then started to skate toward the bench.

Penguins goaltender Tomas Vokoun went behind the net, waiting for the puck sohe could play it for his defense. But instead, the puck was instead skidding into the net, having hit a stanchion and unexpectedly changing direction. Brooks Orpik was a Pittsburgh defenseman then, and when he joined the Capitals two seasons later, he made sure to tell Carlson he was on the ice for that bad bounce.
