Alex Ovechkin named NHL star of month

Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin on Tuesday was named one of the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the month of October.

Ovechkin scored a league-leading nine goals in eight games for a Capitals team that didn’t lose a game in regulation in October for the first time in franchise history. Washington went 5-0-3 in October before losing its first game in regulation on Monday at Tampa Bay.

The 36-year-old ranked second in the NHL with 15 points, as he added six assists to his nine goals. He registered a point in seven of the Capitals’ eight games.

He opened the season with two goals, including the 732nd of his career, which passed Marcel Dionne for fifth place on the league’s all-time list.
