Wake Forest basketball coach Danny Manning announced yesterday that he had hired Ernie Nestor as a special assistant to the head coach.
Many Deacon fans remember Nestor well. He served as an assistant under Carl Tacy from 1979 to 1985, and served as Dave Odom’s top assistant from 1993 to 2001. Nestor coached current Wake Forest assistant coach Randolph Childress.
Nestor also served as an assistant at James Madison from 1976 to 1979, was an assistant at California from 1985 to 1988, was the head coach at George Mason from 1988 to 1993, followed Dave Odom to South Carolina and served as his top assistant there from 2001 to 2003, was the head coach at Elon from 2003 to 2009, was the director of basketball operations at Penn State from 2010 to 2011, was an assistant at Missouri on fellow former Wake Forest assistant coach Frank Haith’s staff from 2011 to 2012, and was an assistant at Navy from 2012 to 2017 before retiring in 2017.
