In dramatic and almost scripted fashion, a backup quarterback entered a game for the Irish on Saturday afternoon to pull off a late game heroic task that conjured up memories of one Joe Montana.
With 12 seconds left on the clock, DeShone Kizer hit Will Fuller for a 39 yard touchdown pass to put the Irish ahead for good.
“I came out very slow, being a typical freshman,” Kizer said afterward. “I took too long to get my protection down, and all of sudden there’s two seconds on the clock. I’m clapping for the ball, and my footwork isn’t the best, and I ended up throwing the ball right in the dirt.
