The game pitted two champions against one another as Iberostar Tenerife are reigning Basketball Champions League winners and Guaros De Lara (out of Venezuela) won the 2017 FIBA Americas League. Guaros De Lara were also the reigning champs in the FIBA Intercontinental Cup.
