If you don't know the name Thomas "Bray" Malphrus, you should.
Malphrus was the charismatic, no-nonsense, mohawk-and-eyeblack-wearing defenseman who, as a senior captain, led the Virginia Cavaliers to a wholly unexpected NCAA National Championship in 2011.
The 2011 season was an emotional roller coaster with Coach Starsia suspending Shamel and Rhamel Bratton before completely restructuring the defense and changing the plan of attack. One of the biggest changes moved long stick midfielder Malphrus to a position on the close defense. Bray dominated.
After suspending the Brattons, the Cavaliers came out and handled Penn to the tune of 13-2, defeated Bucknell in an amazing overtime comeback, then cruised past Cornell and Denver before besting Maryland for the title.
