Knights’ Deryk Engelland gets 1-year, $1.5M contract extension

Deryk Engelland will return for a second season with the Golden Knights.

The veteran defenseman and longtime Las Vegas resident signed a one-year contract extension worth $1.5 million Monday prior to the Knights departing for Nashville, Tennessee, where they begin a four-game road trip Tuesday against the Predators.

Engelland, 35, was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

“That’s your goal going into the season, especially on a UFA, is to get something done sooner rather than later,” Engelland said in a statement released by the team. “I’m getting a little older now and to be able to stay here at home and play another year, that’s your whole goal going into the season and I couldn’t be more happy.
