Vanderbilt spring preview: There are some holes to fill, and QB Kyle Shurmur must improve

Between Vanderbilt’s start to spring ball on Monday and its conclusion with the “spring showcase” on March 25, fourth-year coach Derek Mason is preaching competition.

“This spring will be the most competitive since we’ve been here,” he said. “Every job will be open to competition. Last year has nothing to do with next year.”

In improving from two wins in 2014 to four in 2015 and six last season, including their first bowl game under Mason, the defense-minded coach just wants his team to get better in each facet of the game, along with improving its depth.
