Vanderbilt football to honor Commodores pitcher who drowned

For its second game of the season, Vanderbilt football plans to pay tribute to a Commodores athlete who died this summer. The team will honor former Commodores pitcher Donny Everett at Saturday’s game against Middle Tennessee, the athletic department announced Friday.

Everett died in June in a drowning in Normandy Lake near Manchester, Tenn. He was 19.

He was Tennessee’s Gatorade Player of the Year at Clarksville (Tenn.) High and was selected in the 29th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Milwaukee Brewers before choosing to attend Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt’s players will wear decals with Everett’s number, 41, on their helmets during the game with Middle Tennessee.
