Vanderbilt Endures Wild Sixth Inning to Defeat San Diego

Entering the sixth inning, Vandy held a 6-0 lead behind a Kyle Smith home run and five strong, scoreless innings from Ben Bowden. Then the game got crazy, as games often do early in the college baseball season. The Commodores and Toreros combined for 13 runs in the sixth inning, which took a full hour to complete.

Bowden coasted through five easy innings of work in his first college start on just 55 pitches. But in the sixth inning, all five hitters he faced in the frame reached base and Bowden, who had never pitched more than three innings before this outing, was pulled with the score at 6-2.
